Snow Management in the Central Business District

The snow season is upon us and with it the challenge of snow removal from the Central Business District (CBD). Public Works recognizes the importance of providing timely snow removal service and works hard to clear the streets, parking areas and sidewalks to your satisfaction. This page will help outline the practices followed by the Village’s snow management team which may have an impact on the public parking available for your business patrons and pedestrian access on public sidewalks and roads.

When snow totals are less than 1.5”, the Public Works Department will clear a 4’ path. Property owners are responsible for the remaining snow removal in front of their building. When snow has fallen to a depth of 1.5” or more, a contractor for the Alliance of Downtown Glen Ellyn (ADGE) will clear sidewalks in the CBD. The enclosed letter from the ADGE explains the parameters and limitations of this contract. In addition, Public Works staff will remove snow on any sidewalk where the Village owns the adjacent property; this will be done regardless of the depth of the snowfall.

The map below outlines the street and parking facilities in the CBD that are cleared of snow by the Public Works Department. Snow may be plowed from street and parking areas into the center of the street creating windrows. Openings are left for access to parking facilities, driveways and pedestrian crosswalks. The snow is then loaded onto trucks with a snow-thrower and hauled away. An alternative method involves piling snow into select parking stalls and using front end loaders to transfer snow into trucks for disposal. During a large snowfall, snow will need to be cleared from the roads during normal business hours. The Police Department will block a section of street off to all vehicles until it has been cleared of snow and then move to another section until all streets are clear of snow. Removal of snow overnight after the snow has stopped is the preferred method as vehicular and pedestrian traffic is at a minimum. Our goal is to have all snow removed within 12 hours after snow has stopped falling.
