Glen Ellyn Bookstore Celebrates 50th Anniversary on Thursday, August 19 at 7pm

Glen Ellyn, Illinois -  The Bookstore in Glen Ellyn, Illinois announces plans for a 50th Anniversary celebration on Thursday, August 19 at 7pm. The event is open to the public, and will feature free cake and prizes to thank the community for its support throughout the years. In addition to the 50 year celebration, The Bookstore will recognize the 25 year commitment of its current owner, Jane Stroh, and will celebrate the success of its 50 Hour Reading Marathon held in June for the benefit of the Glen Ellyn Children’s Resource Center.

Bookstore History

The Bookstore was founded by Vic and Rosamond Du Jardin prior to 1960, but moved to its current storefront at 475 N. Main Street in Glen Ellyn in 1960. The old brick building dates back to 1892, and was originally home to McChesney’s General Store. Rosamond Du Jardin was the author of teen fiction set in the malt shop era, including such titles as Senior Prom, Boy Trouble and Double Date. Vic Du Jardin was an avid reader who often read books while working behind the cash register.

Jack and Marguerite Rice purchased The Bookstore from the Du Jardins in 1973. The south half of the store was made into a record shop, and The Bookstore was limited to the north half. According to their son David Rice, “my parents named it ‘The Book Store – M. Rice – Prop. 1973′ in order to hearken back to the small town stores they had known in their youth.”

In 1987, Marguerite Rice was ready to retire and sold the Book Store to Barb and Dwight Reed, who owned it until 1997. Barb Reed was once a school librarian at Forest Glen Elementary School in Glen Ellyn. In 1997, the Reeds retired to operate another independent bookstore in Frankfort, Michigan. Jane Stroh had been an employee of the bookstore since 1985, and in 1997, she and her husband Tim purchased it from the Reeds.

Survival Story

According to Jane Stroh, the reason The Bookstore has survived for so long is because of its loyal customers: “Glen Ellyn is very loyal to us. In turn, we strive to be an intregal member of the community. We employ passionate readers who have strong ties to the community, and the camaraderie that we have with our customers is hard to beat.”

This might be the reason that The Bookstore has survived the challenging economic conditions for small independent bookstores. It has a long tradition of hosting children’s book parties and now hosts monthly author appearances and literary events in the store. It supports area book clubs with its annual Book Club Wine and Cheese Night, and has an annual Summer Reading Program for both children and adults. Every holiday season it has a charitable gift book program for the children associated with Bridge Communities, and it donates many ”Breakfast at the Bookstore” private book reviews to local fundraisers. Bookstore employees volunteer their time giving book reviews to local retirement homes and civic organizations. The Bookstore also donated 10% of the profits it made from the 1st Annual Downtown Glen Ellyn Bookfest to the Glen Ellyn Public Library.

50th Anniversary Events

In recognition of its 50th Anniversary, The Bookstore was one of the main sponsors of the First Annual Downtown Glen Ellyn Bookfest held on June 19, 2010. The Bookstore organized unique and successful literary events by partnering with other members of the Downtown Alliance and the Glen Ellyn Public Library. In addition, throughout the entire year, The Bookstore has held a monthy raffle for a $50 gift certificate available to all customers who spend over $50. This year the Downtown Alliance honored The Bookstore’s 50th Anniversary by choosing a book-related theme for the annual summer scavenger hunt.

50 Hour Team Readathon

Jane Stroh came up with the idea of a 50 Hour Readathon to celebrate the Bookstore’s 50th Anniversary. The Bookstore decided to partner with the Glen Ellyn Children’s Resource Center, a not-for-profit organization that provides tutoring and support services to children in poverty in Glen Ellyn. Area readers formed teams to read a total of 50 hours over one weekend in June, raising pledges for the Resource Center. Teams of avid readers sign up for the event, including a team of Glen Ellyn Village Trustees, a team from the Glen Ellyn Public Library, a team representing the Resource Center, as well as teams of Glen Ellyn families. The Readathon raised over $3,500, and there are plans for another event next summer.

One of the teams led by Bookstore customer Dee Netzel and her daughter Sophie included 13 families, 44 readers and 8 pets. They named themselves “The Reading Regatta” and read a total of 346.5 hours over a 50 hour period the weekend of June 18-20, 2010. Sophie Netzel read a total of 26 hours, and other team members logged in anywhere between 1 and 23 hours. Children read out loud to family pets during the Readathon. The lucky pets included Maverick Farmer, Groundie Lloyd, Whimsey Netzel, Honey Schaffer, Lizzie Snyder and Dreidel, Fez and Sebastian Stacks.

50th Anniversary Party

At The Bookstore’s 50th Anniversary Party on August 19th, The Bookstore will honor those who participated in the Readathon and will award prizes for Most Voracious Reader, Most Voracious Team, Most Money Raised and Best Team Spirit. Prizewinners will receive free gift certificates to The Bookstore. In addition, all persons attending the party will be eligible for free raffle prizes and suprise 50th Anniversary gifts. The free event, which last year drew a crowd of more than 6,000 fans, transforms
Main Street from Crescent Boulevard to Pennsylvania Avenue into a jazz oasis and is
presented by the McAninch Arts Center and 90.9fm WDCB Listener-Supported Public
Radio, in partnership with Karnes Prickett Design and the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce.
For the fourth consecutive year, Jazz Fest Glen Ellyn visitors will have the opportunity
to hear Chicago’s top jazz musicians, experience the amazing Hursthouse Jazz Garden
and enjoy delicious food from Tap House Grill.

Gates open at 2:00 p.m., and this year’s schedule includes Jo Ann Daugherty Trio, 3
to 4 p.m.; Andreas Kapsalis & Goran Ivanovic Guitar Duo, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.; Ava Logan
with Bruce Oscar Trio, 6 to 7 p.m.; Darwin Noguera’s Evolution Sextet, 7:30 to 8:30
p.m.; and Richie Cole Alto Madness featuring Henry Johnson, 9 to 10 p.m.
Pianist and composer Jo Ann Daugherty moved to Chicago in 1998, quickly becoming
a staple of the local jazz community. The Jo Ann Daugherty Trio released its first album
in 2000 and she has performed with Randy Brecker, John Abercrombie, Howard Levy
and others. She also performs frequently throughout Chicago as a leader and sideman
and was included as part of the Chicago Jazz Exchange Quartet for two weeks of concerts
in Giverny, France.

The Andreas Kapsalis & Goran Ivanovic Guitar Duo celebrates the tradition of old
school guitar performance, yet embraces the current rapport while building a new
repertoire for the next generation of guitar players. Kapsalis’ Spanish-inflected playing
complements the Serbian compositional and improvisational mind of world-renowned
Goran Ivanovic, providing an acoustic cinematic experience.

Award winning actress and jazz vocalist Ava Logan performs music from the Great
American Songbook, including tunes recorded by Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald and
Lena Horne. Bruce Oscar is best known as the afternoon host of WDCB’s All Things
Jazz, but he is also a frequent accompanist, and for leading his own jazz trio.
Nicaraguan-born jazz pianist and composer Darwin Noguera made his debut with
the Miami Beach Symphony Orchestra at age of 14 and is founder of the Evolution
Quintet and co-founder of the Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble. His debut album with
Evolution Quintet, “The Gardener,” was well-received and was nominated for a Chicago
Grammy Award.

Renowned bebop alto sax player, arranger, composer and educator Richie Cole
has earned a reputation as one of the master sax players of his time, having played
with Buddy Rich, Lionel Hapton and Doc Severinsen. He’s traveled the world, performing
in various venues and recorded more than 50 albums. Cole’s Alto Madness
features guitarist Henry Johnson who has toured with Jack McDuff, Ramsey Lewis
and jazz legend Joe Williams.

Admission is free and sponsors fund the majority of the event’s cost. Community
member donations are, however, appreciated. Festival goers also are encouraged to
bring their own chairs, as seating is limited for this popular event.

Picnic in the Park

Picnic in the Park while you witness the summertime spectacle of the Glen Ellyn Cardboard Regatta, as hundreds set sail in full regalia. Enjoy great food – burgers, brats, hot dogs, and corn. The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Department will be the chefs of the event. All proceeds go to the 4th of July committee, an all volunteer organization, to fund the 4th of July Parade and Fireworks.

She’s no desperate housewife. On the contrary, local author Fiona McGier has everything she’s ever wanted: a loving marriage, four great kids and a cozy home in Wheaton.

“It’s an honor to be invited,” she said. “One reason I’m looking forward to it is that it’s the end of the tour. It’s always kind of nice to do that last event and say goodbye to that book.”

Berg is the author of 22 books, including two chosen as American Library Association Best Books of the Year. Most of her works are novels geared toward women, although she has also written about divorce from a man’s perspective and tried her hand at nonfiction with a book containing advice about writing.
